Earth Day 2022: Global Plastics Treaty Negotiations Begin

Earth Day 2022 marks the start of the fourth round of negotiations for a global plastics treaty.

Delegates from 175 countries will meet in Nairobi, Kenya, from May 23-27 to discuss a legally binding agreement to reduce plastic pollution.

This year's Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a significant moment in the fight against plastic pollution.

The negotiations for a global plastics treaty are the culmination of years of work by environmentalists and policymakers. In 2019, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) adopted a resolution calling for the development of a legally binding agreement to address the full lifecycle of plastics, from production to disposal.

The upcoming negotiations will be the fourth round in a series of meetings. The first round was held in Uruguay in 2020, the second in Norway in 2021, and the third in Senegal in 2022.

The goal of the negotiations is to reach an agreement that will reduce plastic pollution in all its forms. This could include measures to reduce the production of single-use plastics, improve waste management, and promote recycling.

A global plastics treaty would be a major step forward in the fight against plastic pollution. It would provide a framework for countries to take action to reduce plastic pollution at the source, and it would help to harmonize global efforts to address this critical environmental issue.
