Lifeguards Give Update After Alligator Spotted By Tybee Island Beach

Alligator Spotted on Tybee Island Beach: Lifeguards Give Update

What Happened?

On Wednesday, August 10, 2023, lifeguards spotted an alligator near the 16th Street Beach access on Tybee Island.

The alligator was approximately 6 feet long and was seen swimming in the ocean.

Lifeguards' Response

Lifeguards immediately closed the beach to swimming and evacuated the area.

They then called the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which arrived on scene and captured the alligator.

DNR's Statement

The DNR stated that the alligator was not aggressive and was likely just looking for food.

They also said that it is not uncommon for alligators to be seen in coastal areas during the summer months.

Safety Precautions

The DNR recommends that people take the following precautions when swimming in areas where alligators may be present:

• Be aware of your surroundings and look for alligators before entering the water.

• Do not swim in areas where alligators have been spotted.

• If you see an alligator, do not approach it. Slowly back away and leave the area.

Beach Reopens

The beach was reopened to swimming on Thursday, August 11, 2023.

However, lifeguards are advising swimmers to be cautious and to follow the safety precautions listed above.
