Candidates hope Top End voters are independent thinkers
As Northern Territorians set off for polling booths, independent candidates are hoping voters in the Top End will shun the major parties and back their campaigns.
Independents believe the political system is broken
Many independents believe the political system is broken and that the major parties are more interested in looking after themselves than representing the people.
Nearly 70 per cent of respondents to an Australian National University survey said they believe the political parties are too influenced by vested interests.
Independent candidate for the seat of Arnhem, Justine Kerrigan, said she was running for office because she was fed up with the major parties.
"I'm sick of the lies, the spin and the broken promises," she said.
"I'm not beholden to any political party or vested interest. I'm only answerable to the people of Arnhem.
